THE WHALE
Reeling from a previous trauma, kind-hearted writing professor Charlie (a staggeringly heartfelt Brendan Fraser), has spent years self-medicating his depression with food. He now has sunken into a reclusive lifestyle, spending his days teaching online courses in order to hide his appearance in a society riddled with body-shaming. His only friend, Liz (an unforgettable turn from Hong Chau), a nurse, pleads with him to seek medical attention as his weight and habits become life-threatening. But Charlie’s only real concern is reconnecting with his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), a relationship he desperately wants to make right before it is too late. Shot in claustrophobic 1:33 ratio to mirror Charlie’s sense of being trapped by his grief, The Whale packs an emotional punch that will resonate with audiences for months to come.
