A BRIGHTER TOMORROW
In a jubilant return to form for Nanni Moretti (MIA MADRE, PFF24), A Brighter Tomorrow is a semi-autobiographical memoir that finds aging director Giovanni (Moretti) struggling to finish his latest film. Giovanni is equal parts narcissistic and self-deprecating. As he weaves in and out of his film’s heavy subject matter, he grapples with alienation from an industry that has long since abandoned the old-school techniques, equipment, and convictions from which Giovanni came. His film is a decades-spanning, sprawling period piece about Soviet Russia’s invasion of Hungary and its impact on the Italian communist party in the 1950s. Not wanting to compromise his vision, the obsessive director continually butts heads with everyone from his free-spirited, arrogant actors to the beleaguered stage crew. As with all of Moretti’s greatest work, A BRIGHTER TOMORROW is equal parts film criticism and self-reflection. He places his patented playful, Fellini-esque style on this modern satire of aging, directing, and the current state of cinema.
