BETWEEN THE RAINS
Kolei is a young boy from the Turkana-Ngaremara community, which valiantly fights to survive an unforgiving drought and deadly territorial conflicts. He’s enamored with the men around him, such as his brother, a warrior who refuses to succumb to fear. Even as the reach of the climate crisis expands, the men maintain their strength and strong sense of tradition. Over the course of four years, Kolei’s childhood slips away as he reluctantly journeys into manhood, struggling to reconcile the man he’s expected to become with who he truly is. There are moments where he seeks refuge in his sensitivity when tending to his ailing grandmother and appreciating the natural world around him. But his vulnerability isn’t always welcome, and his struggles to meet expectations often leave him as the odd man out. With breathtaking cinematography and an empathetic subject at its heart, Andrew H. Brown and Moses Thuranira’s award-winning documentary is a heartwarming coming-of-age story capturing a young man’s exploration of his identity amidst the destructiveness of climate change.
