EILEEN
In contrast with the unruly young inmates at the penitentiary where she works, meek New Englander Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO) barely lets out a peep. Her repressed emotions and simmering desires only rise to the surface during private, intimate moments alone. Everything changes with the arrival of Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), a hip, bewitching psychologist with a platinum-blonde Marilyn Monroe coif. Her arrival at the prison awakens curiosity, envy, and possibly desire in shy twentysomething Eileen. As the two dance around their curious magnetism, Eileen shields herself from the barrage of insults from her alcoholic, former cop father (Shea Whigham). When Rebecca lets Eileen in on a secret, the two are sent down a tantalizingly dark path full of shock and glee. Based on the bestselling novel by MY YEAR OF REST AND RELAXATION author Ottessa Moshfegh (who also co-wrote the script), director William Oldroyd’s EILEEN is an exhilarating, twisted Hitchcockian thriller with a deliciously nasty streak of pitch-black humor.
