IN OUR DAY
Over the last three decades, prolific Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo has become a beloved fixture of the international festival circuit, known for his introspective and subtle storytelling, which often delves into themes of relationships and communication using a distinctively minimalist approach. With his 30th feature, Hong once again teams with his frequent collaborator Kim Min-hee (THE HANDMAIDEN, PFF25), who plays Sang-won, a depressed former actress who’s recently returned to South Korea. Meanwhile, Uiju (Gi Joo-bong)—an aging poet whose work has recently been rediscovered by younger readers—has just lost his cat. Over the course of an ordinary day, both Sang-won and Uiju are visited by people looking for answers about their artistic careers as well as advice on headier topics. As Hong wryly observes the ensuing conversations, similarities begin to emerge between the two disparate interactions. A low-key delight for ardent Hong fans and newcomers alike, IN OUR DAY is a funny and subtly profound tribute to the seemingly mundane events that shape our lives.
