LATE BLOOMERS
Join us after the screenings for a Q&A with producers Alexandra Barreto and Taylor Feltner.
The kind of hapless Brooklynite who performatively carries an acoustic guitar that she never seems to play, 28-year-old Louise (Karen Gillan, PFF27’s THE PARTY’S JUST BEGINNING) is a bit of a mess. Deeply cynical and only barely able to support herself, Louise’s situation goes from bad to pitiful when she falls from a windowsill while drunkenly attempting to jimmy open her ex-boyfriend’s window, landing her in the hospital with a broken hip. There, she meets her match in the form of elderly Polish “bad girl” Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), who speaks no English but communicates volumes with her terrifying glare. Despite some initial animosity, Louise reluctantly accepts a job to become Antonina’s daytime caretaker. The two misfits form an unexpected bond, with Louise eventually gleaning more about Antonina’s colorful past and gradually beginning to face her own demons in the process. Both laugh-out-loud funny and deeply moving, LATE BLOOMERS is a knowing and witty look at what it really means to grow up.
