THEY SHOT THE PIANO PLAYER
Over the course of his brief career, pianist and composer Francisco Tenório Júnior established himself as one of the most significant artists in Brazilian music, leading the way for a new generation that would spread the country’s vibrant sounds worldwide. But Tenório’s rise was cut tragically short when he went missing under mysterious circumstances while traveling in Argentina. In this animated docudrama, Jeff Goldblum lends his indelible drawl to the role of an American music journalist investigating the strange case of Tenório’s disappearance. Teaming up once again after the Oscar-nominated CHICO & RITA, Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba have crafted another vibrant, tuneful animated feature, which vividly evokes the free-spirited and hopeful environment of Latin America in an era just before military regimes cracked down with full force. Featuring music by Caetano Veloso, João Gilberto, and other luminaries of Brazilian music, THEY SHOT THE PIANO PLAYER is a spirited evocation of a bygone era of free-wheeling creative innovation, as well as a bittersweet tribute to a man who never got to see the full breadth of his influence.
