TÓTEM
TÓTEM is a deeply personal look at family grief through the eyes of seven-year-old Sol (Naíma Sentíes), who is spending the day at her grandfather’s house in preparation for a surprise party being thrown for her terminally ill father. Between an elaborate hand-painted cake, too much alcohol, and impossibly tough decisions over chemotherapy, the bustling chaos around the house reaches a breaking point, resulting in family-wide tension. And although the heartfelt, homemade celebration is brimming with love for Sol’s father Tonatiuh (Mateo Garcia), the fraught and fragile emotional state of his family is palpable. Uncertain of how to navigate through the grief she is facing with this inevitable tragedy looming, Sol looks for answers to some of life’s most difficult questions. A massive critical hit from this year’s Berlin Film Festival, TÓTEM is a thoroughly lived-in story told with sincere compassion that is firmly rooted in the innocence and uncertainty of Sol’s emotional journey.
