A postmodern smorgasbord of anachronistic lingo and obscure pop culture references, PULP FICTION sent a literal jolt of adrenaline through the film industry upon its release in 1994 and established Quentin Tarantino as one of the defining cinematic voices of the 90s. 25 years later, the film remains as enthralling, dense, and surprising as ever. The freewheeling narrative pinballs among a group of characters operating among the seamy criminal underbelly of Los Angeles: hitmen Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson); their employer, crime lord Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames); his hard-partying wife Mia (Uma Thurman); and prize fighter Butch (Bruce Willis), who’s on the run after double-crossing Marcellus. There are also drug dealers, sexual deviants, 1950s theme restaurants, and much more. Former video store clerk Tarantino transformed his obsessive love of both high and low culture into a critical and commercial hit, as well as a cultural touchstone that continues to influence filmmakers today.
