PFF SPRINGFEST – LUCE
JULIUS ONAH | USA | ENGLISH | 2019 | 109 MIN
Upper middle class white couple Amy and Peter (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth) are proud parents of Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) whom they adopted from war-torn Eritrea ten years ago. After initially struggling to adapt to life in America, Luce has become a star student and athlete, beloved by his classmates and his school’s faculty. But when Luce turns in a paper for a history class that reveals some troubling views on violence, teacher Harriet Wilson (Octavia Spencer) begins to suspect that darker impulses lurk beneath Luce’s charming demeanor. As the characters grapple with the situation at hand, their discussions come to encompass larger issues of racial bias, privilege, and the discrepancies between people’s true selves and the way we’d like to see them. Adapted from JC Lee’s button-pushing Off-Broadway play, this penetrating social drama is unafraid to interrogate sensitive, still-unresolved corners of the American psyche, and is sure to inspire passionate debate long after the credits have rolled.
Cast: Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tim Roth
