THE RULES OF THE GAME
JEAN RENOIR | FRANCE | 1939 | 110 MIN | NR | FRENCH, GERMAN, ENGLISH | 35MM
A weekend getaway to the vacation home La Colinière is anything but relaxing for members of the French bourgeoisie as they stumble over lies, affairs and even murder in Jean Renoir’s THE RULES OF THE GAME. Upon his dashing arrival by plane, pilot André (Roland Toutain) is disheartened to find that his already-married love, Christine (Nora Gregor) is not there to greet him. His literal broadcasted dismay sets off a domino effect that leads to a congregating of friends, enemies, and lovers at the weekend estate of Christine’s also cheating husband Robert (Marcel Dalio). Despite the inevitability of World War II, Renoir inundates the film with callous quips and barbs about the perfunctory bourgeois life through the estate’s observant and equally romantically starved servants.
Often touted as one of the greatest films of all time in Sight & Sound’s coveted poll, Renoir created a bawdy mise en scene souffle for all time.
