ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI
Regina King’s captivating drama imagines what happened one night in 1964, when four of the greatest figures in sports, music, and activism met in Miami.
In February of 1964—soon before he changed his name to Muhammad Ali—boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) defeated heavyweight champion Sonny Liston at the Miami Convention Hall. After the match, Clay headed over to the motel room of his friend Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), where they were joined by soul singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and football star Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). Based on the acclaimed play by Kemp Powers, ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI is a fictionalized account of what might have happened on this historic night, getting into what made each of these towering figures tick and observing the fireworks as they joke, banter, and match wits in debates on topics ranging from religion to politics to civil rights movement, topics that are just as essential today as they were 40 years ago. Making her feature directorial debut, Regina King asserts that she’s not just one of the greatest actresses of her generation, she’s also a major filmmaking talent.
